What is a soul midwife, I hear you say?

They are non-medical companions who guide and support dying people to help them have a gentle, dignified and tranquil death. Overall they provide comfort, support and reassurance, working in homes, hospitals and hospices. Soul Midwives come from all walks of life and have so far included teachers, veterinary assistants, funeral directors, therapists -- and even a rock star!

Felicity Warner (above) sounds like an amazing woman and is the founder of the worldwide Soul Midwives movement. She came up with the idea of soul midwifery after sitting with hundreds of people at the end of their lives.

Last year Felicity received two major awards for her work. She was named End of Life Care Champion of the year by The National Council for Palliative Care at the House of Lords. And, she was End of Life Doula of the Year, through The Good Funeral Awards.

I think we should all learn more about Soul Midwives as they can do a lot of good things, including:

1. Providing gentle therapeutic techniques and ensuring compassionate care at all times

2. Recognising and supporting the individual needs of the departing soul to enable a tranquil death

3. Using sound, touch, colour and smell and other gentle techniques to help alleviate pain and anxiety

4. Supporting families and loved ones.

According to the Soul Midwives website, in traditional cultures around the world death has always been seen as an important rite of passage and a journey across a spiritual threshold. It says modern soul midwives draw on these ancient skills and traditions, applying them to the modern world and using them to ease the passage of the dying.

There is even a Soul Midwives’ School near Bridport in Dorset! And, a distance-training programme.

Some soul midwives charge while others offer their services voluntarily.

Felicity has already written two books, A Safe Journey Home and The Soul Midwives' Handbook. She is working on another book called The Sacred Oils – Healing Spirit and Soul, which will be published in the autumn.

A book -- and a lady and movement -- to look out for!

Until next time,
